Between 1916 - 1925, Joostens mainly tended towards more abstraction in Antwerp. However, he would never produce a purely abstract image. The origin and decline of life shows and upwards and downwards whirling movement that symbolises the cycle of life. In the background we see a tower, a cremation tower? The title determines a figurative reading to a great extent.
