Around 1920, Magritte and ELT Mesens were in contact with the godfather of Futurism, Filippo Tommaso Marinetti. The futurist par excellence happily sent the duo his extensive futuristic manifesto. The dynamic rendering of the working smiths makes one think of the futuristic translation onto canvas by Gino Severini and Enrico Prampolini above all. Magritte comingled Futurism with a Cubist language of form. Prosper de Troyer, Pierre-Louis Flouquet and Paul Joostens, to name the most important, manipulated a similar Cubist-Futurist style.
